DESCRIPTION

B·R·A·H·M·S PCT (Procalcitonin) can be a beneficial marker for differentiating microbial etiology versus other causes for inflammatory reactions and as an aid in antibiotic stewardship.  Mounting evidence of procalcitonin’s value coupled with the FDA’s approval of automated assays has allowed for the implementation of these assays in hospitals of all sizes.  Join Jessica Krochmal, MD and Kari Murad, PhD as they describe their experiences of bringing this assay into a smaller, community-based teaching hospital.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Review the regulation and kinetics of procalcitonin during infection and sepsis.
  • Summarize the implementation strategy.
  • Understand the implementation process and how success is closely tied to education and physician engagement.
  • Review the strengths of case review and feedback to clinical teams to ensure proper test utilization.
