Outstanding Contributions to Education in Clinical Chemistry

This award recognizes an individual who has devoted a major portion of his/her professional life to enhancing the practice and profession of clinical chemistry through education. The educator selected for this award has made significant, innovative, and/or cumulatively outstanding contributions to education in clinical laboratory science. These contributions should include excellence in education beyond the local level, with widespread recognition of the recipient's excellence which may include teaching, directing, mentoring, writing, and speaking abilities, ideally to multiple levels of audiences.

Roger Bertholf

Roger Bertholf, PhD

Roger L. Bertholf, PhD, is Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry at Houston Methodist Hospital, Professor of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, and Program Director of the Clinical Chemistry Fellowship in the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital. Bertholf became a diplomate of the ABCC in clinical chemistry and toxicological chemistry in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He currently serves on the ABCC Board of Directors, and chairs the ABCC Credentials Committee. His scholarly contributions include 55 peer-reviewed papers, 48 published abstracts, 24 invited papers and reviews, 2 books edited, 38 book chapters, 2 AACC/NEJM Learning Lab modules, and he has conducted 74 workshops on laboratory medicine topics for national organizations. Bertholf served on the Professional Practice in Clinical Chemistry Review Course Organizing Committee from 2007 to 2011, the last 2 years as its chair. He currently is President of the Academy of the AACC and serves on the AACC Board of Directors. Dr. Bertholf was President of the Association of Clinical Scientists in 2004-2005, and received their 1999 Young Clinical Scientist Award, 2003 Clinical Scientist of the Year Award, and 2005 Diploma of Honor. The American Society for Clinical Pathology selected Bertholf for their 2011 Southeast Regional Member Award, and 2014 President’s Award. In 2012 he was appointed Editor in Chief of Laboratory Medicine. He also serves on the editorial board of Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science and as Assistant Editor of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology.
